After high school I went to Swarthmore College and studied economics and sociology. After college I spent two years doing alternative military service at Bryn Mawr Hospital and Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti. At Hôpital Albert Schweitzer I worked in an excellent public health program that monitored the health of children and adults throughout a large rural region. My economics education and hospital experiences led me to grad school in health care policy where I met my wife, Nancy.

In 1976 we moved to Hanover, NH, with me working in regional health care planning at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Nancy teaching economics at Dartmouth College. We are retired now. Our two sons are launched and married, and we have five grandchildren. Fortunately, our sons live nearby in Boston and Portland, ME.

School Story

My father got a new job and moved our family from Louisville to Ohio just before my senior year. I missed out on senior year with my classmates, but I have many fond memories of good times at WHS.

Covid is an eerie time. I hope everyone is safe. Nancy and I have cancelled all of our summer travel plans and we are staying near home, with long walks or bicycle rides every day. Also reading a lot and watching birds on our deck. My parents used to have 15 cardinals at a time in their backyard in Louisville. We only have one pair up here in NH, but they are interesting to watch. They arrive reliably near dawn and dusk, and intermittently throughout the day.

Hey Leslie! Long time no see. I am glad you have joined the website. I remember (or falsely remember?) visiting you in the boondocks of Kentucky early in your career. Like you, my wife and I are spending a good portion of our time caring for aging parents and other ill relatives. We are gaining valuable experience, but we are also learning each situation brings requirements for new knowledge and sensitivities. I am fortunate to have spent my career in health care, and we rely a lot on my sister, who has been an ICU, Frontier, workplace, Home Health and now Hospice RN. Even with all this background and support, we are learning, as they say, that growing old is not for sissies!
